Canon launches DC420 and DC410 DVD cams
Two new models in the new DC400 series are set to come out this April: the flagship DC420 and the DC410. Both are geared towards families, with ease of use and simple operation being key.
No PC editing of footage is really needed, since once you've filmed your baby being sick on itself, it's ready to be relived and stored away on DVD immediately.
But the new models offer 30.5mm accessory threads, allowing you to add filters to the lens. So, should you end up realising vomiting babies look even more hilarious through a fish-eye lens, you only need invest in a lens attachment and not a whole new camera.
Canon's 'Advanced Zoom' optics provide 45x magnification on the DC420, and 41x magnification on the DC410. A start-up time of one second also enables you to quickly capture moments otherwise missed by camcorders taking several seconds to initialise.
Both models natively record in 16:9-format standard-definition widescreen, and support dual-layer DVD-R discs, and if that wasn't excitement enough, still images can be captured to SD or SDHC cards.
You've got 'til April to wait to pick up either of the DC400 models, so in the meantime feel free to peruse our gallery of them both (a gallery can be just two photos -- who said it can't?). Prices are to be confirmed, and we'll have full reviews for you as soon as humanly possible.
Panasonic's spring camcorders get three chips and long lenses
You won't, however, see the likes of popular, older, budget three-chip models, such as the PV-GS320 -- at least not in the first half of the year. In fact, you won't see any tape- or DVD-based models at all from Panasonic, according to the company. Ever.
For its standard-definition clients, Panasonic now zooms out to 70x. On one hand, these stalker zoom lenses can be quite useful for recording wildlife, for example, but that's not really a mass market. Also, no matter how good image stabilisation is, you're going to have to shoot using a tripod at lengths like that.
As expected, the rest of both the HD and standard-def lines is more of the same: more space on hard-disk models and more built-in memory for flash models, as well as some tweaks to face detection. In the case of Panasonic's everything-resistant models -- the SW series -- they just got a little tougher.
Shown above is the Panasonic SDR-H80.
JVC Everio range for 2009: Just add iTunes
YouTube upload is simple, with a direct upload button on the side of each model. iTunes is less straightforward, with the video exported as a file that can be converted and then imported by the program, rather than directly uploaded. Once it's in iTunes, your video can be synced to your iPod or iPhone to watch on the go.
The standard-definition range includes the MS120, MG630 and MG645. The MS120 records to a dual SD card slot, which allows you to swap out cards easily, and back up and transfer footage between two cards. The MG630 and MG645 both pack 60GB hard-disk onboard memory, 35x zooms, and the option to upscale video to HD then output via HDMI. Lastly, the MG680 boasts a 120GB disk.
JVC then gives us the world's smallest, slimmest and lightest hi-def HDD camcorder: the HM200. It records to dual SD card slots and boasts a 20x Konica Minolta lens. Face detection finds and adjusts for up to 16 faces.
At the top of the range is the HD300. Like the HM200, it packs a CMOS sensor, 20x zoom and 'Full HD' video. Video is stored on a 120GB HDD. Like all the cameras in the new line-up, stills are recorded to microSD cards.
Finally, JVC showed off a concept Everio model. Few details were forthcoming except that it would take SD cards and feature optical image stabilisation, 'SLR-like' controls and a 9-megapixel CCD -- the 'Bentley' of the range. So no Flip Video Mino, then. Click through our photos to take a closer look at the new features on the new models.
SONY’S NEW CYBER-SHOT W-SERIES CAMERAS BRING ADDED PERFORMANCE AND EYE-CATCHING DESIGN
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 13, 2006 — Sony has re-engineered its W-series of top-performing Cyber-shot® digital still cameras to embody the virtues of a traditional camera style and satisfy modern tastes for sleek, compact design.
In addition to sporting eye-level viewfinders in the fashion of traditional cameras, the new DSC-W50 and DSC-W30 models have large LCD screens and are significantly more compact than previous W-series models.
Both new cameras offer six-megapixel image resolution for high-quality prints, high-light sensitivity for fast-action shooting and more natural-looking pictures in low-light conditions, precision Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lenses, and MPEG1 movie recording.
Available in silver, the DSC-W50 model features a 2.5-inch, easy-to-view LCD screen wrapped in a metal-alloy body with sophisticated etching and details. The DSC-W30 model also comes in silver with a two-inch LCD.
“These new models will be attractive to people who prefer the look and feel of a traditional camera, but without the bulk,” said James Neal, director of digital imaging products at Sony Electronics. “We’ve also increased the light sensitivity, which minimizes the need for flash photography, and improved the cameras’ user interface for better photography results and overall camera experience.”
No More Guessing What those Icons Mean
Anyone who has ever found menu icons on a digital still camera mysterious will appreciate the new function guide on the latest W-series models. When menu icons are selected, such as a specific shooting function or scene mode, a text explanation is displayed on the LCD making it easier to take a great shot. This function guide can be turned off once the user becomes more familiar with the camera.
Built for Better Performance
Both new models include high light-sensitivity settings up to ISO 1000, which allow for shooting at higher shutter speeds to capture fast-moving subjects with less blur. With higher light sensitivity at your fingertips, you can shoot in available light without a flash for more naturally-exposed, “true-to-life” pictures. With Sony’s Clear RAW ™ imaging technology, you can up the camera’s sensitivity without dramatically increasing picture noise, which makes pictures look blurry and grainy.
Sony’s ultra-fast Real Imaging Processor™ circuit delivers quick start-up, fast shot-to-shot times, and long battery life -- up to 400 shots on a single charge for the DSC-W30 model. It also speeds up the cameras’ sophisticated auto-exposure and multi-point, auto-focus features so that users get the picture right the first time.
Both cameras have 32MB of internal memory, which can be expanded further with an optional Memory Stick Duo™ media card or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ card, now offered in capacities up to two gigabytes.
Make the Most of High-Resolution Images through Prints
You can make high-quality prints by simply connecting these models to a Sony DPP-FP50 digital photo printer. You can even create postcards or calendars using the printer’s supplied software.
With Sony’s ImageStation® online photo service, you can expand your options to print tens or even hundreds of pictures, create online photo and video albums, or make customized gifts such as photo books and calendars.
The Cyber-shot DSC-W50 will be available in early March for about $250, and the DSC-W30 is available this month for about $230. Bundled accessories include rechargeable Lithium ion batteries (NP-BG1), charger (BC-CSG), USB and AV output cables, and Cyber-shot viewer software. Options include a lithium ion battery (NP-BG1) for about $50, a travel charger (BC-TRG) for about $60, a sports pack (SPK-WA) for about $100, and a 30mm lens/filter adapter (VAD-WB) for about $30.
